A loop course of 5 stages to glide through this iconic landscape with ease and enjoy the views over this spectacular corner of basques. This route blends nature, quiet backroads and contact with the naturals, the basques, in their daily lives, either at work or being witness of their secular traditions.

Leaving San Sebastian heading East and passing by fishing and marine towns Hondarribia will be reached. Here a boat will be taken to cross the river Bidasoa which borders with France .Following the seaside path by the “corniche” to the typical basque and french fishing town of Sant Jean de Luz. Then turning inland to visit the gorgeous villages of Askain and Sara, cycle uphill to cross again the border to Spain through a low summit and reach, dowhill, the town of Vera de Bidasoa , already in the region of Navarre.

Pre-stage

Arrival in San Sebastián and you move on our own to the accommodation hotel for the first night. Take free time to visit the old city where you Will find the world famous “Pintxo” or “Tapa”, the unique miniature food based on excellent raw materials. The establisment, also called Bar, have the counters plenty of this excellet and varied food.

STAGE 1

San Sebastián – Urnieta

Breakfast and departure along the city bike lane to Pasajes San Pedro. We will take the boat to cross in 3 minutes to the other side, where is the medieval town of Pasajes San Juan. Beginning of the ascent to Mount Jaizkibel (450mts.). Downhill to the border town of Hondarribia

STAGE 2

Urnieta - Leitza

As soon as we leave Andoain we will take the Leizaran Greenway. This route or greenway will take us along the old railway line to the Navarran town of Leitza. We will pedal through the narrow and deep valleys that we will link through tunnels with not very good lighting (carry a flashlight or headlamp to place on your head). We will find ourselves cycling along the mighty Leitzaran river. Arrival and rest of the day to visit the town of Leitza. Accommodation

STAGE 3

Between Leitza and Lecumberri - Plazaola Greenway

From the Plazaola Tourist Office, located in the old station building, we set off in the direction of Lecumberri. This track will take us in a continuous ascent towards the middle area of Navarra. The landscapes will change significantly and we will see peaks and mountain ranges around us. This area has no less than 15 tunnels along its route, some of which are 2.7 km long. They will illuminate and give light as we go. Arrival and accommodation. Rest of the day to walk around Lecumberri. Accommodation

STAGE 4

Come Back to San Sebastián

We will pick you up and will bring you back to San Sebastian

SUMMARY

This is a route to do as a family. There are three stages that will take us from the shores of the Cantabrian Sea to the interior of the mid-north region of Navarra. We will depart from Ondarreta beach, cycling through the romantic area of San Sebastián, leaving the city along the track that goes parallel to the Urumea river, reaches the rural interior. We will cycle through the bike lanes that we find until we reach the first kilometers of the Greenway of Leizarán that we will cross to the town of Leiza. The last stage we will cycle along the Plazaola Greenway, ending the route in the Navarra town of Lecumberri.

HIGHLIGHTS

The valleys of Leitzarán and Larraun (Plazaola), which join the lands of Guipúzcoa and Navarra, are an authentic natural sanctuary. The route through its greenways runs between its dens forests of beech and oaks.

RECOMMENDATION

Carry or equip yourself with flashlights to go through the tunnels that we will find, as well as take warm clothes and raincoats.
